Laying the Foundation

Lesson Overview

This lesson lays the foundation for an effective classroom environment, making expectations around student behavior clear, and beginning to engage students in community building activities. Collaboratively, students generate classroom agreements that center on participation, listening, and respect.

Lesson Objectives

1. Lay the groundwork for a supportive, safe classroom environment.

2. Students will complete a brief baseline assessment to inform future versions of the curriculum.

How to Prepare for this Lesson

1. Make sure you have completed the Teacher Questionnaire before beginning the Curriculum.

2. Have a computer setup that is connected to a projector with A/V capabilities.

3. Have the following links ready for viewing:
        • Student Pre-Unit Surveys

4. Have the following materials ready at the beginning of class for use through the Lesson.
        • Talking Piece (an everyday object that can be passed around to students)
        • Flip chart/display board
