Respond with empathy and care when young people disclose abuse or exploitation
When a child or teen shares that they've experienced harm, abuse, or exploitation, the response they receive in that moment is critical. How adults listen, react, and provide support can shape a young person's healing journey and determine whether they feel safe enough to seek further help. This training prepares adults to respond to disclosures from children and teens with empathy, calm, and care. Participants will learn how to create a safe environment for sharing, practice active listening skills, and offer supportive, non-judgmental responses. The session also covers how to avoid common mistakes that can unintentionally cause further harm, understand mandatory reporting responsibilities, and guide young people toward the resources they need to stay safe and begin healing. By the end of this workshop, attendees will feel more confident in responding compassionately and appropriately when a young person chooses to share their story.
