Lesson 6

Becoming Critical Consumers

50 minutes

Lesson Overview

In this lesson, students will participate in activities that help them identify and understand the ways in which abusive, oppressive messages are propagated via pop culture and the media. Students will be encouraged to look critically at the media that they consume and the media that they share on social media, and solutions will be solicited throughout.

Students may find it difficult or uncomfortable to realize that they can enjoy a piece of content, while also critiquing it through a sociopolitical lens. Holding both of these truths is possible and encouraged. To have an engaged conversation around social and political topics, students will be considering what it means when we don’t separate the art from the artist, or the content from the sharer. The goal of this lesson is to facilitate literate, critical consumption; students may or may not choose to disengage from a previously enjoyed media, and this is okay.

Lesson Objectives

1. Students will continue to develop a common language, through working definitions, that allows us to deepen our conversation

2. Students will develop the skills needed to analyze and critique language, imagery, and media.

3. Students will apply their growing vocabulary to the content they are consuming and sharing on social media

4. Students will critically examine the media they are consuming and sharing, and identify underlying cultural and social communications

5. Students will continue to generate solutions for the Solutions Mural
