Lesson 2

The Danger of Silence

50 minutes

Lesson Overview

In this lesson, we will be covering the broad topics of Oppression, Privilege, Vulnerability and Empowerment. The purpose of this lesson is to better equip students with a vocabulary to discuss these issues; we will be using and building on this vocabulary throughout the unit. We are using this as a starting place in order to truly understand the dynamics of abuse, the varied experiences of victims and perpetrators, as it’s imperative to look closely at the way power operates in our culture and society, in addition to relationships.

To ground our discussion, we will explore these concepts using real-life examples to increase relatability.

Today’s lesson will also introduce the Solutions Mural, an interactive activity that will continue throughout the unit. As students engage in discussions, instructors are encouraged to solicit and write their ideas for ways in which young people can help to end inequality and abuse, such as sexual exploitation. In that sense, every Solutions Mural is unique to each classroom.

Lesson Objectives

1. Students will review the definitions of Social and Political, and then view a brief TedTalk and begin to build a vocabulary to facilitate discussions of Oppression, Privilege, Vulnerability, and Empowerment that will be used throughout the unit.

2. Students will begin to collaboratively create a Solutions Mural, which will track solutions generated by the class, throughout the unit. At the end of the unit, the Solutions Mural will inform students’ Capstone Project.
