Get the Facts - Child Sex Trafficking

Lesson Overview

This lesson provides opportunities for students to learn and use new vocabulary, read with purpose, and work together as a team to decipher myth from fact on important information regarding child sexual exploitation and trafficking.  

The intention of this lesson is to give students facts that will empower them to feel knowledgeable about the material and to encourage them to be change-makers by refusing to perpetuate myths. At the end of the lesson, students will discuss the main ideas in the extended trailer for a documentary about child sex trafficking in America called, PLAYGROUND.

Lesson Objectives

1. Students will continue to review terms and learn new vocabulary.

2. Students will critically read text to learn facts and realities related to sexual exploitation and trafficking.

3. Students will watch a film trailer for PLAYGROUND, a documentary about child sexual exploitation and trafficking and discuss its main themes and ideas.

How to Prepare for this Lesson

1. Prepare answers to any questions asked on the Exit Cards from Lesson 4. Answer at the end of 1. Welcome & Agreements.

2. Have your classroom Agreements Poster and the Solutions Mural displayed.

3. Have a computer set up that is connected to a projector with A/V capabilities.

4. Print out copies of the following handouts:

5. Pull up the Playground Trailer video to display to the class.

Please preview it beforehand to gauge whether it is appropriate for your students based upon their emotional maturity level and capacity to cope with potentially activating themes and topics.
