Perfectly Imperfect: Building a Belonging Community

In this lesson, students will explore the concepts of imperfection, fitting in, and belonging. Through journal prompts, class discussions, a lecture, and a collaborative group activity, students will reflect on their own quirks and mistakes, understand how these contribute to a sense of belonging, and creatively envision a school environment where everyone is accepted as they are.

how to prepare for this lesson

At the start of class, teachers should have the following prepared:

  1. A plan to split class into small groups
  2. Student journals ready to be distributed
  3. Art supplies for students who choose drawing for the activity
