Pyramid Case Studies

60 minutes

This lesson is currently under review with Nest Educational Advisors. Please check back later for updates.

In this lesson, students will conduct research and develop case studies examining historical incidents of violence through the lens of the Violence Pyramid. Working in small groups, students will analyze how us vs. them thinking, cultural attitudes, dehumanization, and other topics from their previous lessons contributed to their chosen event. Through research, discussion, and presentation preparation, students will map the progression of violence from biased attitudes to harmful actions, identifying potential intervention points where violence could have been prevented.

Note to Educator

This lesson's purpose is to give students an opportunity to put the theory of the Violence pyramid to the test. Not all events may have clear examples for every level of the pyramid, some students may push back on the theory - and that is okay. The unit first and foremost seeks to challenge students on accepting the status quo and to think critically about violence and how to prevent it. As long as students who take a different approach or arrive at a different solution can provide logic and reasoning to support their analysis, this meets the core learning objective of developing critical thinking about violence prevention.
