Understanding Radicalization and Supporting Peers

In this lesson, students explore radicalization through discussion, practice, and reflection. They analyze the boundary between strong beliefs and extremism, learn about the radicalization process, and practice supportive conversation techniques. Through paired activities and guided discussion, students develop skills for recognizing concerning behaviors and maintaining productive dialogue. The lesson emphasizes prevention through connection while teaching when and how to involve trusted adults.

how to prepare for this lesson

At the start of class:

  • Students should have journals out
  • Students should have H2.1-2 Violence Pyramid Handout from lesson 1 for reference throughout the lesson and/or the classroom Violence Pyramid chart paper should be on display.
  • H2.6 Radicalization Conversations cards printed (1 for each pair) and pre-cut.
