Building Connections Across Differences

This lesson focuses on helping students recognize and build connections across perceived differences. Through journaling, direct instruction, and structured interview activities, students explore the concept of cross-cutting identities and practice having bridge-building conversations. The lesson emphasizes finding common ground and shared experiences with those who may seem different, helping to prevent othering and reduce intergroup conflict.

how to prepare for this lesson

At the start of class:

  • Pairs pre-determined to save time and ensure students are appropriately matched up
  • Students should have journals out
  • Students should have H2.1-2 Violence Pyramid Handout from lesson 1 for reference throughout the lesson and/or the classroom Violence Pyramid chart paper should be on display
  • Copies of H2.8 Classmate Interview Handout for each student
