Understanding and Preventing Interpersonal Violence

Lesson Overview

In this lesson, students will define and discuss interpersonal violence and identify some warning signs of unhealthy/abusive relationships. They will discuss how violence exists on a continuum, how seemingly subtle behaviors can lead to violence on a larger scale, and will work in groups to identify behaviors . They will learn some reasons people stay in abusive relationships and brainstorm ways to support and help a friend who is in an unhealthy relationship.

Lesson Objectives

  • Define and understand the different types of interpersonal violence.
  • Recognize warning signs and risk factors for interpersonal violence (IPV), including power imbalances and manipulation tactics.
  • Identify healthy relationship behaviors and communication skills that promote safety and respect.
  • Develop practical strategies for addressing/responding to IPV, including safety planning, reporting options, and support resources.
