how to prepare for this lesson

In this lesson, there will be a variety of activities for students to practice the six techniques for navigating their emotions. As there is a lot of information and skills building placed in this lesson, it is important to have these activities prepped ahead of time.

  • For the “Accept Your Emotion” activity on Slide #13, students will need either a journal or notepaper readily available.
  • For the “Deep Breathing” activity on Slide #15, students will be divided into four groups and each given one of the Breathing Cards. Print out one of the Breathing Cards Printout and cut the cards out ahead of class.
  • For the “Express Yourself” discussion on Slide #17, students will watch a video about expressing emotions through dance. Please precheck videos before class, as internet policies may vary among schools, to ensure accessibility. An alternative video is provided.
  • For the “Ask for Help” discussion on Slide #19, please insert the information for the school counselor, social worker, or other mental health support staff on your campus here. Include a picture if possible. And be sure to give the counselor or relevant party a heads up that you will be sharing their information with the class.
  • For “Self-Care and Coping” on Slide #21, each student will receive one copy of the Coping Strategy Shield Handout. If you wish and extra time can be given to this lesson, the handout can be completed in class. Otherwise, this can be given as a homework assignment. Students will need this handout at the start of the next lesson to present to the class.

Students will use their Feelings Wheel Handouts throughout the whole lesson and should have them out at the start of class.

Please ensure to pre-check videos before class, as internet policies may vary among schools, to ensure accessibility.
