how to prepare for this lesson

Set up the large paper bag “stations” around the classroom first to build excitement for students. Print out the Parts of Kindness printouts and tape or glue one label to each bag. Inside each bag, place the corresponding Empathy, Helping, and Sharing Our Feelings Badges that you have pre-cut. Students will collect these during the activity. You may choose to have students collect all the badges from the stations at the end of the entire “Part of Kindness” discussion, or have students collect one badge individually after discussing each one. Any type of bowl, box or bag can be used as an alternative to the large paper bags in this activity.

Students will receive their Kindness Scout Handouts during this lesson. They will need these throughout the You Belong Here unit as they collect more badges. Either have students keep these handouts safe with their What’s My Feeling? Handouts or collect them at the end of each lesson.

Students will be asked to reflect on feelings as they learn about empathy. It can be helpful for some students to have their What’s My Feeling? handout from Lesson 0A available to reference throughout the lesson. If you choose, hand back students’ What’s My Feeling? handouts at the start of the lesson. Collect them again at the end for use in future lessons. Or alternatively, have one completed What’s My Feeling handout posted on the classroom wall or board during the lesson.
