how to prepare for this lesson

Talking about grief and loss in early childhood is an important way to help students process their feelings, validate and acknowledge their loss, and offer healing and copy strategies. Students who have not experienced grief and loss may have many questions or worries after the lesson, and it is wise to leave time in the days following to continue to share resources and remind students that you are there to answer any questions that have come up for them.

Students will be referencing their Feelings Wheel Handouts through this lesson and should have it out and available at the start of the lesson.

On Slide 5, you will need a bell to conduct the 3M activity: a mindfulness breathing exercise.

On Slide 15, students will work in groups to create their Community of Care Billboards. Each student should receive a copy of the Community of Care Billboard Graphic Organizer. This lesson allows for 25 minutes of group work. If there is not enough work time for groups, feel free to extend this lesson into a part two and allow students another class session to complete the piece. You can then complete the final You Belong Here unit wrap up slide (Slide 17) at the end of that lesson period. Have a variety of poster and art materials available for groups to create their billboards. If you would like and have available computers in the classroom, consider encouraging students to use Canva to create their billboards (Posters). Canva has free accounts and templates for students to use. Create an account ahead of the lesson and test to make sure there will be no issues for students when logging in.

Please ensure to pre-check videos before class, as internet policies may vary among schools, to ensure accessibility.
