Taking Action: From Bystander to Upstander

Lesson Overview

Students will learn the differences between someone not being kind and bullying. Through this lesson students will be empowered to be an Upstander to bullying and have an increased level of comfort in reaching out for help. Finally, students will demonstrate an understanding of the steps to stand up to bullying by creating “Stand Up to Bullying” posters in groups.

how to prepare for this lesson

For the "Stand Up to Bullying Posters" activity on Slide 15, students will create posters that illustrate ways to stop bullying by being an Upstander. Materials needed include large sheets of paper or poster boards, markers, crayons, colored pencils, scissors, glue, and additional art supplies like stickers and glitter. Students will need to be split up into groups of 3-4 students.

Students will need their Feelings Wheel Handouts throughout this lesson and should have them out at the start of the lesson. Be sure to collect the Feeling Wheel Handouts at the end of the lesson or have students put them in a safe place for future use.

Students will not be adding to their Kindness Bridges during this lesson and will not need their Kindness Bridge or Kindness Bridge Parts #1 Handouts.
