Building on the Feelings Wheel, students will share and reflect on common strong emotions. They will learn and practice three ways to handle these emotions—mindfulness, positive self-talk, and seeking help—through a scenario activity. If time permits, the teacher will distribute positive self-talk bracelets as reminders of the skills learned.
This lesson will serve as the foundation for the emotional awareness and self regulation work that makes the You Belong Here curriculum unique. This lesson is most effective when students contribute their own ideas and are engaged at a high level.
Students will reference their Feelings Wheel Handouts throughout the lesson and should have them available at the start of the lesson. Be sure to collect them at the end of the lesson or have students put them in a safe place for future use.
Students will each receive a Positive Self-Talk Bracelet to remind them of the new skill that they learned during the lesson. If time allows, have students put bracelets on during the lesson. Each Positive Self-Talk Bracelets Printout includes 10 bracelets and can be duplicated depending on class size. These should be pre-cut ahead of class.
