After recapping Lesson 4 on boundaries and consent, students will brainstorm different responses to not receiving consent and reflect on which responses are appropriate or harmful to our Table of Friendship. They will learn about intuition, the difference between secrets and surprises, and the importance of never crossing physical boundaries like private areas. Students will be introduced to their Body Boss Toolkit and how to seek help, and begin formulating their own safety plans. They will practice identifying secrets versus surprises and responding to inappropriate secret situations using their toolkits. The lesson will end with a calming meditation.
This is the second of two lessons on boundaries and consent. In this lesson, students will recap foundation terms from the previous lesson on boundaries, bodily autonomy, and assertive communication. In this lesson, students will learn more sensitive topics like, how can we appropriately respond when someone does not give us consent and how to receive help when our bodies are touched in unsafe or inappropriate ways.
Students will be referencing their Feelings Wheel Handouts through this lesson and should have it out and available at the start of the lesson.
Students will continue to add to their placemats and will need two Trusted Adult Sentence Starters each. On Slide 17, students will write in two trusted adults that they can turn to when they need help with a physical boundary violation. Have students write their names on the back and hand back in. Students will not weave these strips during this lesson.
To close the lesson, students will each receive a Secrets vs. Surprises Handout. In pairs, they will answer the questions on the handout. As a class, they will share their answers and reflect. This activity will reinforce identifying secrets vs. surprises and how to use the Body Boss Toolkit to seek help.
If students have urgent questions, encourage them to discuss with you after class. Additionally, on Slide 23, include contact information for the school counselor or a similar resource.
