how to prepare for this lesson

If possible, begin this lesson with students sitting together in a circle on the carpet or form a circle with their seats to foster community.

Students will share unique aspects of their identities, like the different types of families represented in the class, the different languages spoken at home, and different ethnic backgrounds. You can talk about the characters in the book who choose to wear whatever clothing they need to in order to be who they are.

Students will need their What’s My Feeling? Handouts to reference during a discussion on feelings. To save time, distribute these at the beginning of the lesson. At the end of the lesson, students will receive a new Kindness Scout Badge to represent their identities. The Kindness Scout Badges: Identity Heart sheets should be pre-cut into squares, with each student receiving TWO. Students will then color them in and cut them into circles to add to their vests. Distribute student’s Kindness Scout Handouts during this time for them to glue their new badges on. Be sure to collect the Kindness Scout and What’s My Feeling? Handouts at the end of the lesson or instruct students to keep them in a safe place for future lessons.

Please ensure to pre-check videos before class, as internet policies may vary among schools, to ensure accessibility.
