how to prepare for this lesson

This lesson will briefly touch on bullying.  This may bring up some trauma for students and some issues may arise in the classroom.

Please let your school’s Mental Health provider or necessary personnel know that this topic is being covered for the next week and that students will be given their names as safe resources on campus if they need to talk. Include their name on Slide 17 before you teach this lesson.

Students will need their Feelings Wheel Handouts ready at the start of this lesson. Either hand them back or have students take them out at the beginning of the lesson.

Have board or chart paper available for recording students' responses and ideas during a class discussion starting on slide 9.

On Slide 14, students will work on the Speak Up! Video Questions Handout together in groups. They only need one copy per group.

On Slide 15, there is a video about Malala Yousafyai. This video includes gunshots and could be triggering for students. Give a trigger warning to students, an opt out, or play an alternative video of your choosing that highlights how young people can make a difference when they use their voices to stand up for justice.

Please ensure to pre-check videos before class, as internet policies may vary among schools, to ensure accessibility.
