how to prepare for this lesson

If possible, begin this lesson with students sitting together in a circle on the carpet or form a circle with their seats to foster community.

This lesson will serve as the foundation for the emotional awareness and self regulation work that makes the You Belong Here curriculum unique. This lesson is most effective when students contribute their own ideas and are engaged at a high level.

Students will need their What’s My Feeling? Handouts to reference during a discussion on feelings. To save time, distribute these at the beginning of the lesson. At the end of the lesson, students will receive a new Kindness Scout Badge for mindfulness. The Kindness Scout Badges: Mindfulness sheets should be pre-cut into squares, with each student receiving one. Students will then color them in and cut them into circles to add to their vests. Distribute student’s Kindness Scout Handouts during this time for them to glue their new badges on. Be sure to collect the Kindness Scout and What’s My Feeling? Handouts at the end of the lesson or instruct students to keep them in a safe place for future lessons.
